Upper Elementary Curriculum: 9-12 year-olds

"Cosmic" Education

In depth studies of early civilizations through modern times is the focus of the upper elementary. Study of our nation and state also occur at this age. Students prepare reports integrating knowledge gained in other areas (language and arts). Earth science, physical science, human anatomy and environmental studies are all part of the in-depth curriculum for this age level.

Language, Reading and Writing

Reading takes on more purpose at this age level. Students analyze, search for information, and participate in literature circles utilizing more in-depth thinking skills.

Writing is integrated into all areas. Students fully develop their skills in research writing, and journalistic style. Letters, journals, short stories, myths, and poetry are all studied and part of the curriculum. Continued learning in spelling, grammar, and punctuation contribute to successful writing. Computers are heavily utilized to create reports.

The mechanics of language is studied in depth as the students develop research and other writing skills. Use of metaphors, similes, and analogies are studied.

Math

Individually the students move sequentially through the materials, as math is a building process. If not already acquired, knowledge is focused on all operations of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Algebra, geometry, and problem solving are important aspects of the curriculum. Most students are working in the abstract at this point, however discussion of new concepts is often illustrated with concrete examples. Students usually understand math concepts well in advance of their peers in other educational settings.

The Arts

Students take their art knowledge to new levels of understanding by constructing, painting and creating displays related to cultural studies. Music is incorporated into cultural studies as well as studies of instruments of the orchestra and detailed examination of operas. Field trips out into the community to examine art and music up close and personal are an important aspect of this curriculum.

Physical Education

Games and sports such as kickball, soccer, baseball, and basketball are included in the upper elementary physical education program. Good health and hygiene practices are discussed.
