Specialists MUSIC Our music specialist, Joseph Weisnewski, teaches half-hour classes in the primary classrooms and teaches music and recorders for one hour in the elementary classrooms each week. The children learn to identify composers by their music, classical and modern. They learn about operas, listening to the music while Mr. Weisnewski tells them the story. They participate in rhythm and movement activities and basic ear training. They learn basic principles of written music, which is developed further in the elementary program as the students begin instruction with a musical instrument (recorders). FOREIGN LANGUAGE Tiana Nizamic has taught German at St. Nicholas since 2006. She teaches half-hour classes in both the primary and elementary classrooms. Her lessons include vocabulary, songs, games, and as the children enter the elementary program the lessons include reading and writing as well. Teachers add Sign Language and some other simple language materials in Spanish, Chinese and Japanese as the curriculum dictates and as parent volunteers share their cultures. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Our vast outside environment lends itself well to the physical development of the preschool child. The elementary students spend at least one hour each week in specialized activities with Coach Karlie Sanders developing large muscle skills and learning skill and process of such activities as: basketball, jump rope, soccer, baseball, football, and general strength development. |
